I do not know, how sensitive nuclear information to the Italian public?

During the Cold War, Hungarians were generally known, that their Communist politicians are lying.
They said, that there are no nuclear weapons stored in Hungary, and they will be brought here by Soviet helicopters from Ukraine, only in case of international tensions...
:P

When the Cold War ended, in 1990, the Soviet South Army Group commander announced publicly, that all nuclear weapons are removed from Hungarian soil.

No we have in public the former storage houses, the target lists (with several North Italian targets) complete with casualties calculations, etc...

These is an example WarPac attack plan from 1965.
www.mediafire.com/file/watv1dk702vxdam/1965_Hadijatek.pdf
On page 29, you can find the Hungarian+Soviet nuclear weapon numbers.
On page 32, you can find the targets, and the predicted damage caused by WarPac strikes.
On page 34, you can find the NATO nuclear weapon numbers, expected against Hungary.
On page 35-36, you can find the expected Hungarian targets, predicted to be hit by NATO strikes.

Sorry, but it is in Hungarian...

Hi Rimpianto,

I do not get your question.
Secret Service obviously tried to keep western spies away from SAM sites.
When the only SA-5B Gammon (S-200VE Vega-E) site building started, cars from the Italian Embassy were noted to wonder around...

And what was the principle on which?

Guidance system?
The SAM Simulator has detailed manuals, that can be downloaded from here:
http://sites.google.com/site/samsimulator1972/home

The missile guidance methods are described in detail for each simulated system:
SA-75M Dvina (SA-2F), Command Guidance of 3 missiles, against 1 target
S-75M3 Volhov (SA-2E Guideline), Command Guidance of 3 missiles, against 1 target
S-125M1 Neva (SA-3B Goa), Command Guidance of 2 missiles, against 1 target
2K11-M1 KRUG-M1 (SA-4B Ganef), Command Guidance of 1 missile, against 1 target
S-200VE Vega-E (SA-5B Gammon), Semi Active Self Guidance

Hi Hpasp, it's also available in this page in English & Hungarian.

www.php.isn.ethz.ch/collections/col...5&navinfo=16606

www.php.isn.ethz.ch/collections/col...2&navinfo=16606

A classic Cold War scenario: why we were there (and no, we were not supposed to last)

" ... as in all these scenarios, it is not really clear where retaliatory moves end and pre-emptive ones begin, with both sides" first nuclear strikes being timed at 07:00 hours on 23 June. By 07:30, Budapest, Miskolc, Debrecen, Csap and Komarom are destroyed, as are Vienna, Munich, Graz, Verona, Vicenza and Piacenza. It is difficult to imagine how any successful ground operations could be envisaged under these conditions at all. ..."

And according to your map, all this nuclear nightmare for the Sovietization of Bergamo!?! :D

Basically only at higher command levels, as the firing zones of the Soviet and Hungarian SAM systems were not overlapped.

At the end of the Cold War (1989), the Air Defense had...
Hungarian units:
11th SAM Brigade, defending Budapest (capital), with 6 S-75M Volhov (SA-2E) and 6 S-125M Neva (SA-3B) batteries.
104th SAM Regiment, defending Dunaujváros (industrial center), with 3 S-75M Volhov (SA-2E) and 2 S-200VE Vega-E (SA-5B) batteries.
105th SAM Regiment, defending Miskolc (industrial center), with 3 S-75M Volhov (SA-2E) batteries.
Soviet unit:
327th SAM Regiment, scattered around the country, defending airports used by them, with 6 S-125M Neva (SA-3B) batteries (one per each Soviet AFB).
... excluding the ARMY SAM units.

Hi Hpasp; it's very interesting having you here... one question: we knew (at least we thought to know...) warsaw pact air defence was working as "sectors", so there where area for missile engagement only (MEZ) and areas for fighter engagement only (FEZ). It looked like those areas were never overlapping, it's that true?

ciao!

Yes, it was true.

Each Air Defense Unit (Fighter or SAM) had own Target Acquisition Radars.

We had 6 radio-technical battalions during the Cold War, with own sector of responsibility.
1. Radio-technical Battalion at Pápa, supporting the 47th Fighter Regiment, equipped with MiG-23MF, and MiG-21BiS fighters.
2. Radio-technical Battalion at Taszár, supporting the 31st Fighter Regiment, equipped with MiG-21BiS and Su-22M3 fighters.
3. Radio-technical Battalion at Budaörs, supporting the 11st SAM Brigade, equipped with S-75M3OP Volhov (SA-2E) and S-125M1 Neva (SA-3B) SAM systems.
4. Radio-technical Battalion at Sárbogárd, supporting the 104th SAM Regiment, equipped with S-75M3OP Volhov (SA-2E) and S-200VE Vega-E (SA-5B) SAM systems.
5. Radio-technical Battalion at Kecskemét, supporting the 59th Fighter Regiment, equipped with MiG-21MF fighters.
6. Radio-technical Battalion at Miskolc, supporting the 105th SAM Regiment, equipped with S-75M3OP Volhov (SA-2E) SAM systems.

We had also Soviet units, but they were dedicated for attack...
1st Attack Regiment at Kunmadaras, equipped with MiG-27D
88th Attack Regiment at Debrecen, equipped with MiG-27D
515th Fighter Regiment at Tokol, equipped with MiG-29C
14th Fighter Regiment at Kiskunlachaza, equipped with MiG-29C
5th Fighter Regiment at Sarmellek, equipped with MiG-23M
327th SAM Regiment dislocated at the airports, equipped with S-125 Neva (SA-3A) SAM systems.
